HAW Kiel Urkunde sample from Germany. Fachhochschule Kiel, officially Kiel University of Applied Sciences, is the largest university of applied sciences in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Founded on August 1, 1969, it was formed by the merger of several state engineering schools and higher professional schools in the region, some of which have histories dating back over a century.

As a state-run institution of higher learning, HAW Kiel currently has approximately 7,900 to 8,000 students. Beyond teaching and research, HAW Kiel offers a vibrant campus culture, earning it the reputation of “Dietrichsdorf’s cultural island.” The campus features numerous unique cultural facilities, including a planetarium called Mediendom, a computer museum, and an observatory. The university also possesses the “CampusKunst” art collection, containing over 300 artworks. The Bunker-D building, converted from an old air-raid shelter, houses a café, cinema, and gallery, serving as a cultural center for students and citizens.

HAW Kiel students have spontaneously organized numerous interdisciplinary project teams, achieving remarkable results in various university competitions:

Raceyard: The university racing team, participating in the German Formula Student Championship since 2006, and focusing on building electric race cars since 2011.

Baltic Thunder: The team is dedicated to building wind-powered vehicles, participating in Racing Aeolus, one of the world’s four major sustainable motorsport events.

TomKyle AUV: This project collaborates with the renowned GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Marine Research, focusing on the development of autonomous underwater vehicles, and won second place in the 2016 SAUC-E European Student Underwater Vehicle Competition.

In addition, the university collaborates with Christian Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (Kiel University) to provide students with a rich and affordable university sports curriculum. Students also operate their own campus radio station (Campus RadioAktiv) and campus television station (Campus-TV).

Regarding language learning, the university’s foreign language center offers courses in English, French, German, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, and Chinese, among others. Its library system is also well-equipped, boasting abundant print and electronic media resources.
